Is Sales Your Job Or Your Career?

So you want a Sales Job?

One can’t turn on the news today without hearing about the unemployment numbers in the U.S. and around the world. It’s gotten to be a critical benchmark in how score is kept in political circle and economic growth and recovery. I’ve said for years that a good salesperson would never be out of work. Never. There will always be a need for someone who has the skills to sell and create revenue and profits for a company.

But, I’ve seen more and more people in the last few years get a sales job instead of a career. They’ve taken a job as a salesperson “until something else comes along”.

Why?

Personally, I’ve never heard anyone say, “ I’m a Dentist. But, I’m just biding my time to see what else turns up” or “I’m a nurse, but that’s just until I can find something else.”

So why is the sales profession like that? In my opinion it is because there is a low barrier of entry (most of the time it doesn’t take a degree or specific knowledge to get hired in sales) and that is our fault. We should expect and demand the best of the best. We should treat our profession like others: you want to be a professional salesperson? Then you are going to have to demonstrate your ability or at least the desire to learn the art and skill of selling.

And, yes it can be learned. I believe every bit of skill, knowledge and experience it takes to be a professional salesperson is learned. There is no such thing as a “born salesman”. Has anyone ever been called a born Psychologist? Or a born Accountant?

If you want to make sales your career—and not just a job—commit TODAY to learning your craft. Study, read, practice, take courses—do everything within your power to make this a long-term career. And, unlike 99.9% of all other people in the world—you will never have to worry about being unemployed.

Zig Ziglar once said he’d never opened the newspaper and read about a woman giving birth to an 8lb, 7oz salesman and it’s true. EVERYTHING you need to be a professional can be learned—and YOU can learn it if you make the internal commitment to make this your career.
