Recently I had the opportunity to work with a small business on designing a business and marketing plan. In effect, they brought me in to help them break out of a bit of a slump—they’d had the business for several years but had found themselves a bit stagnant or in a “comfort zone”.
The owner knew she needed to jazz things up, she just wasn’t sure how to go about it.
So, over a period of time I worked with them to develop monthly promotions, get their associates more involved in the business and create an atmosphere of fun and excitement. Heck, they even had a mascot costume that was going unused that I had them break out.
Over the next few months, I spoke with owner on multiple occasions. She kept telling hesitantly, “I’m getting out of my comfort zone”. We both knew she needed to, she just needed a little push.
Fast forward to last month: I got a text message from her that she and her store had been awarded the Operator of the Year and Franchise of The Year at the company’s annual meeting in Las Vegas. I honestly don’t know who was more excited, me or her!
The reality is all I did was light the spark—the real fire had to come from her and her team. They did everything I suggested and then some—they took ownership of the program and really had a lot of fun with it.
So, what would’ve happened if she would have stayed in her comfort zone? Nothing. Nothing would’ve changed and they’d be right where they were when I first walked through the door.
Are you in your comfort zone? Have you gotten stagnant? Do you need a push? Find a way to push yourself—or have someone push you to grow, do more than you thought possible and stretch the bounds of that comfort zone. Because hey, that’s where all the good stuff happens!
