As a professional salesperson or businessperson, one of the common issues faced by all is the battle to keep one’s personal and business life in balance. I’ve had people tell me, “When I’m at work I feel guilty that I’m not spending time with my family and when I’m at home I feel guilty that I’m not working.”
This is one of the great paradoxes of successful people.
Instead of focusing on what we ARE doing, we tend to focus on what we SHOULD be doing. Instead of enjoying where we are, we long for where we are not.
No matter how cliché it may sound, the key is to focus on the here and now. Live in the moment and block everything else out. Have a plan, work it and don’t let outside influences pull you away from what you’ve already determined is important.
Easier said than done? Absolutely.
The solution is to focus on the now–that’s the only thing you can really control. Worry and stress comes from thinking about and placing yourself in positions where you have no control. Today, now, this momemnt–that’s what you can control. Make it the best and the rest seems to take care of itself.
It takes not only practice but a commitment to say, “no”. No, I’m not going to focus on that right now–I’ll write it down and deal with it when I’m done with this. But, not now.
Keep your balance. Enjoy your family time and your work time. As Confucius said, “Enjoy what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
That requires balance.
