I read a quote recently that really struck a chord with me, “We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path without brightening our own” by Ben Sweetland. I’m sure I’d read or heard the quote before but this time it resonated with me. It just hit home.
Are you brightening the path of others? It’s really the reason I write this blog, spend my time speaking, training and working as a Sales Coach.
But, here’s the key: any time I work with someone—I end up learning something. I turn out to be the beneficiary and I gain from the relationship.
Do you have relationships like that at work? At home? In the community?
Do you want to be an inspiration?
One of the greatest things you can do for yourself, your career and your profession is to be an inspiration to others. Inspire confidence in them that there are true professional salespeople left in this world. Inspire younger or new salespeople to strive to be like you. Inspire confidence from your customers and prospects that you are who that want and NEED to do business with.
When a new salesperson is hired, do you take it upon yourself to assist them? You should. They not only represent your company but your profession. Do you think doctors or dentists want someone giving their profession a bad name?
Yet, too many times in sales I see people almost determined to bring down the new guy—to tear him down and shatter his enthusiasm.
Be an inspiration. Set an example.
In the end you will be the one growing and learning from each experience. As I’ve said before, one can learn something from everyone.
So, inspire someone today. Do something to “light” their path—whether it is with knowledge, your time, your talents or in whatever manner. Be an inspiration!
Here is another quote I read while researching this blog: “There are two ways of spreading light. To be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”~Edith Wharton
