As we embark on the final week of 2014, it’s time to turn your attention on 2015 and setting yourself up to make it a phenomenal year. Previously we discussed How To Finish Strong In 2014 and setting some Personal Development Goals For The New Year, but how do you decide where to focus? How do you dig down to find the best place to focus your energy?
Here are 4 questions to start your new year—four questions to ask in order to find your “why” and make sure your time and efforts are properly placed.
Where Am I?
Before you can begin, you mist know where you are. Honestly assess your starting point; like setting the coordinates on a GPS, it’s critical to know where you are as you begin your journey. Whether it’s a physical, emotional, spiritual or financial goal, knowing where you are is the first step to getting where you want to be. This will allow you to appreciate small victories and celebrate little wins along the way. Otherwise, you’d really not know if you’ve made any progress. So, before you begin, ask yourself: Where Am I?
Where Do I Want To Be A Year From Now?
This is the perfect time to set SPECIFIC goals for the coming year. If it’s physical, what do you want to weigh? Exactly. How far or fast do you want to be able to run or bike? What is the one goal you want to achieve and attach a number to it, be realistic and write it down. If it’s a financial goal, again be specific with what you want. You have to be able to see your goal in your mind’s eye before you can achieve it. If it’s involving your career, what position do you want to hold or what advances do you want to make. Write them down.
What Do I Have To Do To Get There?
Honestly. If you’re wanting to lose 30 pounds, it’s going to take some effort. It’s going to take a change to your habits.
You know where you are and you know where you want to go, so what’s it going to take to get there. Once again, be as specific as possible. How much money will you have to save our of each pay check? How much time will you have to spend each day working on your project? How much will you have to commit to exercise? Establish good habits and perform them daily, weekly and monthly. Habits equal results so determine what you have to do to get where you want to be and establish habits to get you there.
Who Can I Ask For Help?
Perhaps the biggest mistake we all make is thinking we can or have to do everything by ourself. Wrong. Who can you ask to help you get where you want to be and accomplish what you want to accomplish? Who has done what you want to do and can give you some tips and perhaps save you some time and energy? I believe we can learn something from everyone, but who specifically can you lean on to help you achieve your goals? Do you need a mentor? An accountability partner? Perhaps a workout partner?
What areas do you need help? Who can you call when you need a pick me up or just a few words of encouragement?
By the same token, who can YOU help? Find someone and be each other’s accountability partner. Set your goals high and find someone who shares your vision for greatness. It will be one of the best decisions you make all year.
